Unsightly Scar from Illegal Kidney Trade

Experiencing any hardships lately?  Many of us have different sets of problems – some are minor, while some are serious enough for us to make dire decisions.  However, there are those who are severely unfortunate in life that they resort to drastic measures in order to solve their problems.  Well, specifically, the “problems” I’m referring to has something to do with money.

All over the world, we learn about different news regarding how people drastically act on something just because they are in a dire situation, and the reason why they did such an outrageous thing is because they lack money, and they desperately need or want to have, accomplish or fulfill something that only money can buy.

If you are on these people’s shoes, are you willing to sacrifice one of your kidneys just to buy something that you think you really need or want?

*India*

India, according to Wikipedia, is #3 on the top three list of organ trafficking nations.

A 32-year-old mother of three agreed to sell her kidney because her family was “drowning in debt”.  Feel free to read “Wives fall Prey to Kidney Trade” for the full story.

*China*

Probably the most popular and recent news regarding someone selling their kidney is about the 17-year-old high school student in China.  He agreed to sell his right kidney just so he could buy an iPad 2.  Feel free to read my post “My Kidney for an iPad2?…. Deal!” for the full story.

*Philippines*

Yep, sad to say, but my very own country is involved in this human organ trafficking shame. One Filipino willingly sold his kidney so that he can provide for his wife and children. Feel free to read “Philippines cracks down on illegal kidney trade” for the full story.

The video below tells about some instances in the Philippines why they sell their kidneys – for reasons such as:  just to buy their very own house, or buy a jeep for livelihood, etc.

If you can understand Tagalog (Philippine dialect), then this three-part documentary will surely open your eyes to what’s happening in the Philippines when it comes to the subject of the illegal selling of kidneys.

Hi Jonathan,
I respect your opinion on this topic. Yup, I would definitely give one of my kidneys if one of my family is in dire need of it.

It is very sad that abject poverty still persists in so many places over the globe that people are forced to make such costly decisions for money. I keep dreaming of an utopian world where atleast everyone’s basic needs are met.

Hi Jean,

I think we can never really achieve a utopian world, as long as there is corruption. Even the richest countries in the world still have poor people living in their areas (who cannot even manage to earn a living that would support their basic needs each and every day).

Hi Johanna,
Our kidneys are very essential to us, but so is the will to live. I would gladly part with one of my kidneys if I have no other choice, but then it must be done the legal way.
Great article, thanks for sharing!

Hi Johanna,
I have once come across a video from BBC covering China’s cruel organ harvesting scheme. They get the human organs from recently executed prisoners in their local prisons. And they do not even tell these prisoners’ families that they will get their organs for other people to use. After they kill them, they cremate them, leaving no clue if their family member’s organs have been taken or not. Can you believe that they schedule massive executions when there is a huge demand for human organs like lungs, liver, kidneys, heart, etc.? Glad I’m not a Chinese citizen.

Hi Aimee,
I have already seen the video you are talking about. The first time I saw it, it was really shocking and I feel sorry for the prisoners’ families in China. I may be half Chinese, but I am glad as well that I do not live in China, hehe! :)

Go this link – I promise it’s not a malware or spam link.
http://mahmnud75.gyxe.com/0-83-sell-my-kidney.zhtml
Up until now (2012), there are still some people who are willing to sell or “donate” their kidneys for money. I don’t know if this is a legit forum, but it’s really disturbing.

Hi David,
I went to the link you shared, and I agree that it really is disturbing..
We can never have the right to judge them, I guess, because those who are willing to sell their internal organs for money must really have gone through a lot of hardship to be able to think of doing this.

Hi Johanna,
This is a very tragic and sad case, but still it happens worldwide currently. It is really too bad that the organ transplant process itself will not be legalized. If the human organ transplant is made legal, then it is probable that it will get rid of a lot of problems regarding the unfair and illegal procedures involved when acquiring body organs from poor people.
Thanks for sharing the video about this. It just proves that extreme poverty can make a person resort to making drastic decisions even if it means it will significantly “reduce” the quality of their body’s health.

Hi Cara,
I think I have read in one news article before that the selling of kidneys and other internal organs have been legalized, but then some things did not go smoothly so they took the decision back.

People are willing to go through extreme measures when they cannot endure extreme hardships anymore.

I totally agree with what you said here. I definitely get irked when there are some people who foolishly worry on things that aren’t very important at all. They just complain how boring or tedious their work is, their salary is too low, their boss is too demanding, their families complain too much, etc. They don’t realize that there are others who are less fortunate than they are.

Hi Marilynn,
I agree, many people (sometimes us too) complain about the things going on with their lives that they forget that there are those who are less fortunate than them. We should make it a habit to count our blessings and be thankful for what we already have, and I’m sure we will be happy and contented whenever we do that.

I am amazed and I applaud the man in the video you shared who sold his kidney so that he can buy his family a home. It’s really sad to see that there are many people like them who are so poor that they have to resort to selling their internal organs just to keep on living.

Hi Rizwan,
Yes, it really is saddening to know and see that many poor people who suffer a lot have to think of selling their own internal organs just to continue living. The private and government organizations are the ones that must address these matters on poverty; however, it is easier said than done. It really is an unfortunate fate for such people.

Hey Johanna,
I am actually an organ donor – don’t want to say which part. I have no problem with donating my own organs, because by the time I’m done using them, I feel great if it goes to someone who really needs them, especially if it is one of my family members who badly needs it. It’s my choice to make.

Hi Erwin,
I agree, donating your own organs is a decision that you alone can make. No one must force you or take it away without your consent.

Many of us take for granted what we have and realize it is important to us when we have lost it. There are two kidneys in each of us, but not everyone can live a normal life with only one kidney. There are some who can, but there are those who cannot live a healthy life with just one. I pity those who resort to selling their kidney just to get by. Their poor status in life pushes them to do drastic measures, and the ones who have the money exploit them for it.

Hi Callum,
A lot of people really take for granted the simplest things that are happening in their lives. I agree, not everyone can live a normal life with just one kidney with them; however, those who are below the poverty line sometimes think that they have no other choice but to sell one of their kidneys to get a substantial amount of money for their everyday needs. It’s also disheartening that the ones who have money take advantage of the poor to get their internal organs and use (or sell) them for their own benefit.

It’s really sad to hear that there are some people who are willing to do this for money. I’ve also heard about children and women being kidnapped and their kidneys are sold by syndicates.

Hi Elena,
Welcome to my blog! :)
The kidnapping of children and women and the taking of their kidneys by syndicates can be a true story. There were some rumors (thought it’s not really proven) in many areas here in the Philippines about children being kidnapped and killed and their internal organs were missing when the bodies were thrown away.

It’s really a sad story, but I believe many people will think twice before getting themselves into a situation that would make their health suffer. But I cannot be sure to say that I would not do the same if I am one of the poorest of the poor. It is a hard decision to make, but extreme poverty can really drive one to sell their own internal organs.

Interesting article. Never, ever would I sell any part of me for an iPad – or anything else like that. When my life becomes so tied to physical things that I would sell parts of my body to get them, that’s the day I need to get some help.

Hi Johanna,
I have seen on TV about the student in China who sold his kidney just to be able to get an iPad2. Actually, even here in India, an unemployed villager did somewhat like that. He sells his blood just to be able to eat 3 times a day.

You can’ t blame some people who opt to sell their internal organs. If ever someone asks me that he/she is interested to buy my kidney, well I will be willing to sell it to them at $100,000. This is called practical, I still have one kidney left if ever that happens, and I know that at some point I will be helping those who need one of my kidneys. For those interested, you can just leave a message at christianjaywoo@ymail.com.
