15 Life Lessons I Learned While Traveling

life lessons learned traveling 198x300 15 Life Lessons I Learned While TravelingIt’s been more than a week since I haven’t posted anything new on my blog here, simply because I was away traveling from June 13 to June 20. We had a bit of trouble going home because there was a typhoon “visiting” the Philippine territory as well.

I wouldn’t have you read a long post here. It’s just sort of quotes to live by, I think. icon smile 15 Life Lessons I Learned While Traveling

Travelling is a great way to not only see the world but experience it too. You can never truly know what a country is like until you have smelt the air, spoken to the people and tasted the food. Seeing the seven wonders of the world on a holiday site is more like a taste of the real thing, much like playing poker.de,  it is a fun, yet is a smaller, sample version of visiting a real casino. There are always a few mottos that keep you going in life, and they differ depending on each person’s point of view.

Here are some random life lessons I have learned while traveling:

1. There are good people everywhere – in every race, in every culture and in every city.

2. Things are not always going to turn out as planned. Sometimes, it turns out even better!

3. Do what you love – and love what you do.

4. Step outside of your comfort zone.

5. Traveling is about experiences, not things.

It is about experiencing new things you may never experience again in your life, having adventures and meeting people and enjoying your existence. It’s all about collecting memories, not objects.

6. To make friends, you must do most of the talking in the beginning and then later, do a lot of listening.

7. There are always challenges in life no matter what your position is. It’s all about your outlook in life.

8. Many of us are experiencing the same thing but interpreting it differently.

Those who can interpret and explain their experience in the simplest language possible will of course gather a crowd.

9. You do not need more than one bag full of possessions to live a nice and fulfilled life.

10. There is no right or wrong course in life.

Things happen for a reason. It’s all about you. Do not let anyone tell you that the path you have taken or are taking is wrong – if you are happy on the path you have chosen, then why is it wrong?

11. You can do or achieve anything you want in life. It is just going to take some work.

12. Life isn’t so hard even without a car. Also, you can be genuinely happy even without expensive possessions.

13. Money is actually NOT the root of all evil. The desire of money for NOTHING is the root of evil.

14. Sometimes, you just need a nap.

Traveling can be exhausting, especially if you are excited to do lots of stuff in a day and you are trying to enjoy the last few days of your vacation. Take a nap, and do not worry, because the world will still be there for you when you wake up.

15. No matter how often you travel, home is still the best.

Travel is an adventure – a transformation. It is energizing, exhausting, exciting and terrifying all at the same time. I may love all the rare and mixed emotions it brings, but sometimes, the best part of it is coming home – back to my own bed, my cuddly kitties, my dear friends, and my beloved family. I wouldn’t trade them for anything in this world.

Hi Jo! Great post! Sometimes I envy those people who travel all the time, who practically make it their career to travel. But yes, there’s nothing quite like going home as well… after traveling for some time, you just want to be home. :)

I have to agree with you about number 1… but I have to say, there are bad people everywhere as well, haha!

Hi Helene,
Thanks!
Like you, I also envy those who travel for a living, but of course, home is still my most favorite place.
I was going to say in #1 that there are also bad people everywhere, but I just wrote “good people”. When we travel, we usually dismiss our conversations regarding the “bad” people we meet. It just ruins the whole experience of traveling, if you know what I mean. We travel to have fun, experience new things and meet new (hopefully all good) people, etc.

There are plenty of what we can learn on every travel. Experience is one of the best you can have because we can easily learn from it.

Hi Dlysen,
You’re right, there are many things we can learn from every travel, whether they be long or short distances and/or long or short durations. For most people, the whole point of traveling is to “experience” new things that they will not experience in their own neighborhood, that does not happen in their daily lives, or something like that :)

Hi Johanna,

Welcome home!

Travelling is great, isn’t it? One week is enough to teach you a lot of things. You can write a book if you went away from one month or two. :)

I can still remember my vacation on the mountains of Morocco! It was stunning! I learned many things and enjoyed my time so much!

I am sure you’re happy to come back to your lovely blog again. You wouldn’t trade it for anything in this world either, right? ;)

Thanks! It’s great to be back home!
Traveling is really fun too. It’s quite a refreshing change from our daily routine, right?
I’ve never been to Morocco. Maybe we’ll go there in the future :)
It’s great to be writing again on my blog, and catching up with what’s happening with my friends, their blogs, and in the blogosphere. Yep, wouldn’t want to trade this also for anything in the world ;)

This is a really nice list, very thoughtful! Its so good that travelling has helped you to make such lovely observations. Its good sometimes to get out of your comfort zone and to look at life from another perspective, when I went to Africa it really changed my opinions on a lot of things, seeing different lives is so refreshing!

Hi Harriet,
I get to travel rarely, and the one week I’m away was really worth it. Got to experience some simple yet great things for the first time like getting to eat new foods, seeing a demo on how to make a traditional clay pot in just 5 minutes, etc.
I’ve never been to Africa. I bet it’s very hot there, but I would love to see some big wild cats that live there up close. :)

Thanks for such a wonderful sharing of life experience. I can only agree with the fact that life is full of challenges and they come any moment of your life and sometimes you don’t even travel anywhere. As for hard work, of course if you work you get it what you want, but I sometimes didn’t get what I needed although I spend lot time doing and working.

Hi Dinara,
You’re welcome! When you want something, you will work hard to achieve it. But of course, not everything you want will be bestowed upon you. Sometimes, when you don’t get something you want, you will get something else and it turns out to be much better! God bless :)

Hi Johanna,

While all the things you mentioned are true, I’d also like to add that traveling is about taking pictures, too! LOL This may not be true to everyone but for me, I love taking pictures and remembrance. This post is really on its perfect timing because I’ll be traveling on Thursday! According to our plan, I would agree that I might only need a nap on some occasions. :D

Hi Calli,
You’re absolutely right! Have fun and take care on your travel today! (It’s actually Thursday here right now). Even though I normally have with me a point-and-shoot camera when we travel, I usually forget to take pictures. Good thing my husband does all that shooting tasks, although the end result is that he is always missing in the photos :)

Glad to see you back here again. Seems like you’re real busy lately too. Hopefully you can travel to Hongkong this year. It’s a very nice place, although we had some trouble on the language barrier part, even if my mom knows how to speak Fukien well. Better get to know some common Cantonese phrases! Do visit HK Disneyland and Ocean Park as well as the other tourist sites there. I’m sure your son will love that!

I like the point about napping – that’s true. Sometimes when everything seems sad and full of unsolved problems, the only thing you need to do is to leave it away for some time and just … have a nap.

Reply

Johanna June 30, 2011 at 12:42 am

Hi Anna,
Yep, even though we rarely travel to far-away places, I can’t seem to shake off the feeling of being sleepy. Napping for an hour or so is a great way to recharge and continue on my merry traveling adventures – or just lounging on a chair chatting with loved ones I rarely get to visit..
Uhm, I also agree with what you said..when you have problems you can’t solve right away, better sleep it off and hope for the best tomorrow..

Hi Johanna,
Taking a nap – I believe it is very important to take nap when a person is on vacation traveling. There was a science magazine that I read which explained that the brain is fooled by thinking that it took a complete eight-hour sleep when in fact it is just a thirty-minute power nap. Be careful though, since the brain analyzes a nap which is more than 45 minutes as a disrupted cycle. You might have a bad mood if that’s the case and would not enjoy your travel.

Hi Sherwin,
I didn’t know about that. Although, I agree that sometimes when I take a nap after work, even if it is just less than an hour, I don’t feel sleepy by the time it is 12 am or 1 am. The next day, I end up having quite a grumpy mood and lesser sleep.

Nap…..
Sometimes if you feel so tired physically, emotionally and mentally all you
need is to take a nap…I experienced it, I really feel exhausted. I even want to
cry of what i feel. But when I take a long long nap, after a nap I feel well…

Hi John,
I agree with you. I seldom travel to distant places, and that reason alone makes me want to not sleep or rest because I want to savor the time of being on vacation. However, getting a short nap can help me feel more energized, be able to do more stuff while outside and enjoy the free time that I have.

I totally AGREE with your last point: HOME is still BEST… =)

Because Travel can truly give one new perspectives (with exposure to new places, rich cultures, etc.) — but at the end of it all — you’d have to LOVE your home!

Here’s an alternative: “Reading a book is like travelling without moving an inch..” — got this from a movie, can’t remember what it was though… =)

Hi Adnan,
Welcome to my blog!
Some people love to travel to places that will enable them to relax, such as the beach or their hotel spa. There are those, however, who love to walk long distances and experience new things such as hunting for foods they never eaten in their entire lives, or doing crazy things like bungee jumping. I can categorize myself as someone who loves to walk around and explore the area.

Hi Joh, Great post. I agree with every one of your insights, and Calli’s too about taking pictures. Traveling does give you a different perspective on most things!

I especially enjoyed your point about nice people. I had to read that one twice because I assumed you would say the obvious about bad people. But I agree, nice people are everywhere too!

Last week my youngest daughter flew by herself 1500 miles to visit her best friend who had moved away in March. My daughter was determined to make this trip and I let her, in spite of my reservations. When the plane took off, they announced that to watch tv you needed to swipe a credit card. She didn’t have one but asked the flight attendant if she could pay cash. The flight attendant said no, that credit cards were required.

The passenger sitting next to my daughter reached over and swiped his credit card on her screen so she could watch tv during the flight. She offered to pay him back, but he declined.

Definitely good people in the world!

Thanks so much for your inspiring post. :-)

Hi Carolyn,
I was actually going to elaborate more on #1 and mention that there are bad people as well, but I decided I should leave it out and focus more on the good persons. :)
That was very nice of the passenger that was next to your daughter in the plane to swipe his credit card and let her watch TV. Sometimes, traveling can simply remind us that there is still some genuine good traits in many people, even strangers.
Glad you liked this post and thanks for sharing with us as well!

Hi Johanna, nice post, I like it. Your lesson 5 is very accurate, you can visit lots of places and enjoy them, but what you will remember forever, they are emotions and feelings that you experienced in these places.

#2 is great! A friend of mine won’t let his wife (a planner for each detail) plan no more than 3 big events during a vacation. To him, if you are scheduled too much, then it’s not a vacation. They have had some very interesting times, just kind of following how the day goes. And yes, no better time than vacation to take a nap!

Thanks for this short but enjoyable post, Johanna. I agree with everything on your list, especially stepping outside of your comfort zone. I grew up travelling because of my dad’s work, so I’m exposed to different environments weather wise and people wise. I would consider that to be different from your travelling experience because where you go is by choice, where I ended up back then was by consequence. Now that I’m independent and can make choices on where to go, travel has taken on a whole new meaning. My current fave destination so far is Bangkok, and I’ve been there four times already. It allows me to escape my comfort zone and experience what the city has to offer. The best part is, it’s really cheap over there so money was never an issue. I also plan to visit Singapore someday, though I hear it’s not as budget friendly as Thailand. Travelling has opened my mind so much and has allowed me to realize how vast this planet of ours really is.

I would replace rule number 4 which I heard a lot and is getting me an allergy with something like “Reasonable work has never killed anyone, so you don’t have to be afraid to practice it, even as a sport.”
Rule number 14 just knocked me on my back. It is the first time today I laugh and I thank you for it.
Rule number 15 depends on how good your home is. Believe me, I have met places I would never left and I met people who succeeded to make me feel better than home, and not just for a couple of days. Traveling is great since it’s so much out there you can explore and discover.
