I really can’t explain it, but ever since I was a little kid, I absolutely love animals. In particular, I love cats (No offense to dogs! I also love them, but I prefer cats more). There is no specific reason why I have come to love these wonderful creatures, but I guess one reason would be that they can relieve you from your stress whenever you pet them. Another good reason is that cats are very good mice hunters as well as these felines can easily be taken care of at home.
Are you a cat lover? If so, I would like to share you some wonderful facts about cats you might not know. Since there are quite many of them, I would just have to divide them in separate posts. Please note that these are not in particular order.
- A cat cannot see directly under its nose. This is why the cat cannot seem to find tidbits on the floor.
- A cat has 230 bones in its body. A human only has 206 bones.
- A frightened cat can run at about 31 miles per hour. Humans can only run at about 26 miles per hour.
- At night, a cat can gather into the extra-large corneas and lenses of its eyes more than six times the amount of light than humans can. Seeing far better than humans do at night time and tending to focus best at a distance of 8 to 20 feet makes cats excellent night-time hunters.
- A cat sees about six times better than a human at night because of the tapetum lucidum , a layer of extra reflecting cells which absorb light.
- A cat will almost never meow at another cat. Cats use this sound for humans.
- A cat will never break a sweat because it has no sweat glands.
- After being handled, cats lick themselves to smooth their fur and get rid of the “human” smell. Licking is also thought to produce a calming effect.
- A cat will clean itself with paw and tongue after a dangerous experience or when it has fought with another cat. This is believed to be an attempt by the animal to soothe its nerves by doing something natural and instinctive.
- A cat will spend nearly 30% of its life grooming itself.

Hi Johanna,
I’ve been waiting for your next set of facts about cats! I really liked the pictures you’ve shown here. The picture with a cat that has a painted skeleton on its fur is really awesome! I bet it was hard to make it if it were real paint. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Aimee,
Glad you liked it! I’m not sure if that was just photoshopped or if it was real paint. But I do think it’s a cute cat photo for this coming Halloween

Nice and funny photos of cats you’ve got here. I am curious on the cat’s meow photo, what kind of cat is that? It sure looks cute! Thanks for sharing!

Hi David,
That cat belongs to a breed called the Scottish Fold. The ears are a result of a genetic mutation. It has distinctive forward-folded ears, large eyes and a cute round face.

This is the first time I’ve seen a Scottish Fold. I Googled it and I think they are very cute and unique. If I will get a pet cat for my favorite niece when she gets older, I will see if I can get her this type of cat.

Well, if cats can’t sweat, how will they control body temperature and problems like over heating? I know dogs don’t have sweat glands either but at least they are keeping their mouths opened and tongue out when its hot outside.

Hi Cristian,
“Cats do not pant” – That is a common misconception about cats. Cats and dogs do not have sweat glands (except on their paw pads), so they release the excess heat by panting. Cats really pant, but because of their size, they usually do not need to. Cats, unlike dogs, are small enough to regulate their temperature by not moving around too much and moving to shady areas. Some cats, such as persians, pant for a short time if they feel hot or after they played, but this is not very common. Also, you will often see cats that stretch their bodies out on the floor to cool off.
Hope this answered your question

I hope people will appreciate these creaturs, some of them are victims of heartless people. I’m not a cat lover but I don’t hate them either. However, it’s so amazing to see how passionate these animals are. Thanks Johanna.

Hi Teyona,
It is really sad whenever I see cases of animal cruelty happening in any part of the world (in the news). Like you, there are many animals that I do not like (such as reptiles) but that does not mean that I hate them.

They lick themselves to get rid of the human smell? So does that mean they don’t like the smell that it leaves on them whenever we touch them?
Soul Annihilator recently posted..Tips On Choosing The Right Broadband Internet For You
Welcome to my blog!
Good question. When you pet cats, the natural oils from your hand get on their fur, and they somehow feel compelled to clean it off. Cats do not have sweat glands, so during warm weather, their licking can also keep them cool. The layer of saliva acts like human sweat by drying and evaporating, thus lifting heat away from the cat’s body. The licking also helps strengthen the cat’s own scent. Even if they like to be petted, it ruffles their fur, so the best way to smooth it out is by licking it.

Probably the coolest thing about cats for me, is that they always land on their feet, no matter what. I don’t know how they do it but it is pretty impressive.
Hi Linda,
There is a scientific explanation how cats could always land on their feet. I believe I will be tackling that in the future cat trivia posts.

Just to add in your cat trivia, I’ve read from other resource that domesticated cats almost spend 70% of their lives sleeping. I found this one true because my moms cat used to be like that since he was still a kitten. My family really love cats than dogs.
